The latest version of this popular plug-in for DVD-lab PRO is now available and can be downloaded from here. Download Link:
- ProEx Version 3.4.1 (Update only - requires Version 3.3.1 or later to be installed)
- ProEx Version 3.3.1 - Part 1 of 3
- ProEx Version 3.3.1 - Part 2 of 3
- ProEx Version 3.3.1 - Part 3 of 3
Due to size and security constraints, the installation has had to be split into multiple files - all 3 files must be downloaded. Once you have downloaded the files, please read the Installation Instructions below before attempting to install this version.
Please be sure to read the Version History further down this page!
Instructions
- Download the latest version from the link provided at the top of this article and save to your hard drive in a convenient folder (eg: C:\Downloads).
- If you do not have ProEx version 3.3.1 installed, you must
- download all 4 files.
- Using Windows Explorer, browse your download folder and unzip “Part2.Zip” to produce “SetUpProEx331-1.bin” and “Part3.Zip” to produce “SetUpProEx331-2.bin”. Both of the .bin files and SetUpProEx331.Exe must reside in the same folder.
- Execute SetUpProEx331.Exe to start the installation process.
- The installation program will check to see if DVD-lab PRO Version 2.x is installed and then install ProEx into the same folder. If the correct version of DVD-Lab can not be found, this version of ProEx will not be installed.
- The installer places a link to the ProEx documentation file (ProEx.PDF) in your DVD-lab PRO Start Menu group.
- Now run “UpdateProEx341.exe” to install the update.
- To execute ProEx simply click on its button on the DVD-lab button bar
- note that ProEx will automatically load the same video (and matching audio) elementary as appears in a DVD-lab Movie window, if that window is active at the time ProEx is run.

Revision History
20-Feb-2007 Version 3.4.1 Build 610
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed a bug which prevented the video elementary file from being opened successfully following an edit operation.
- (Pre-Authoring) Down-graded “wrong VBV Buffer size” to a warning. Although DVD-Video requires that video elementary files be encoded with a VBV Buffer size of 224, other(lower values) appear to work in many cases.
- (Pre-Authoring) The storing of video Extension Sequence Headers in the frame index file could lead to problems if sequences are to be cut. Extension Sequences are in any event unnecessary (for ProEx) so the indexing routine no longer stores these particular headers with the result that video frame index files are now somewhat more compact. We strongly suggest you delete any frame index files (those with a “.frx” extension) created with earlier versions of ProEx and allow the program to re-create them.
- (Pre-Mastering) The ability to preview candidate Layer Break positions is provided. See pages 48 and 53 for more information.
- (Pre-Mastering) Added an option to the Burn Tab which determines whether the burn engine uses any user-specified Layer Break position (or that recommended by ProEx) or whether the engine automatically set the Layer Break. See page 68 for more information.
- (Pre-Mastering) An option to add padding sectors to the end of an ISO Image is provided. In all cases, a single “UDF End Anchor Volume Description” record is written after all the files. If this option is checked, a further 150 such records are appended, this may alleviate the problems some (older/stricter) players exhibit when playing burned media. See page 69.
- (Pre-Mastering) Illegal use of Prohibited User Operation flags is now included in the Analysis Report.
- (Pre-Mastering) The correct audio stream was not always indicated on the DVD Tab’s “Current Streams” box when a Title commences.
- (General) An exception could be thrown at program start if the language database was not opened early enough.
- (General) Relaxed the email address validation routine to allow a numeric in the first character position of a sub-domain. This is allowed by RFC 822 but not by the stricter RFCs 1034/1035; however some domain registers (eg Nominet) do appear to allow this and now ProEx will accept as valid an address in the form of “myname@123.com”.
- (General) Defined two new hotkeys. Firstly, Alt+M switches between Pre-Authoring and Pre-Mastering modes. Also Alt+R minimises/restores ProEx. These additions are due to the fact that custom Caption Bar buttons are not displayed by Vista’s Aero UI. (Thanks and well done Microsoft.)
- (General) Changed the button caption for error and warning Task Dialogs to “Close” (was “OK”) in accordance with MS style recommendations.
12-Feb-2007 Version 3.3.3 Build 609
This update fixes a serious display problem associated with the new Task Dialog object.
11-Feb-2007 Version 3.3.2 Build 608
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed the problem which erroneously reported that one or more GOPs were found to be too short but which also reported the number of affected GOPs as 0.
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed the problem that caused Medium and Small size Jacket Pictures to have superimposed grid lines.
- (Pre-Authoring) The Project Parameters’ table was not being correctly initialised for some users and this caused “List index out of bounds” errors.
- (Pre-Authoring) Incorrect Field Order was being incorrectly reported for NTSC video elementary files.
- (Pre-Mastering) ProEx will now issue a warning if it detects the presence of a PGCEdit backup folder within a compilation about to be burned.
- (Pre-Mastering) Layout/Layer Break routines now allow for DVD-A/DVD-V hybrids and/or Jacket Pictures and/or other DVD-Rom content.
- (General) ProEx’s “on-top” characteristic is now an option.
- (General) Vista-like “Task Dialogs” replace the older Message Dialogs almost universally.
- (General) Various minor tweaks and improvments.
7-Jan-2007 Version 3.3.1 Build 607
- (Pre-Authoring) Implemented a fix to the problem of ProEx not being able to open the elementary files if the same elementary files are loaded into an active DVD-lab Movie window.
- (Pre-Authoring) Opening an audio elementary file would result in a “File Lock” error. Fixed.
- (Pre-Authoring) Loading an alternative audio stream caused the loss of any Chapter Points and Subtitle entries. Fixed.
- (Pre-Authoring) Certain buttons on the Subtitle Tab were not being correctly enabled/disabled. Fixed.
- (Pre-Authoring) Jacket Pictures were not being correctly resized. Fixed.
- (Pre-Mastering) The individual VTS sizes on the Shrink VTS Tab were incorrectly calculated. Fixed.
- (Pre-Mastering) DVD Volumes can now be burned to disc media using the integrated, fully-licensed “CopyToDVD” burning engine from VSO Software SARL.
- Note that this is not the full “CopyToDVD” product and its functionality is restricted to burning DVD-Video to DVD single and dual layer discs.
- An active Internet connection is required for the first time a disc is burned only. This is to allow the burning engine to validate and activate itself using VSO Software’s licensing server. No personal information is transmitted.
- When burning to dual layer discs, the Layer Break is automatically set.
- (Pre-Mastering) Successfully compressed Volumes can now be automatically burned to suitable DVD media without further user interaction.
- (General) Added an option to the Options-DVD Tab to enable the selection of the type of blank media normally used (i.e. DVD “Plus” or DVD “Minus”). This is necessary as the number of available sectors varies according to disc type.
- (General) Various minor bug-fixes and code improvements.
- (General) Major documentation changes and enhancements including the ability to jump to pages of interest using Adobe Acrobat’s “Bookmarks” window.
24-Oct-2006 Version 3.2.5 Build 605
- (Pre-Authoring) Some users experienced an exception being generated when they loaded a/v assets. There is a problem with certain versions of the Windows Common Controls DLL which objects to string properties being set to a zero-length string - to clear the previous contents. A single space character is now used.
- (Pre-Mastering) Added “Play Single Chapters” button to the VCR control panel.
- (Pre-Mastering) Added DVD Analysis functionality which reports on the structure of the Volume from a DVD player’s perspective. A number of common (and not so common) errors and inconsistencies are identified, some of which ProEx is capable of fixing.
- (Pre-Mastering) During playback, the current Domain and its video characteristics are given in a status area at the foot of the DVD Tab.
- (Pre-Mastering) The main status display (beneath the video window) now identifies menu numbers by their Menu PGC number, rather than their consecutive number. This will make it easier to correlate between ProEx and DVD-lab’s Connections Window.
9-Oct-2006 Version 3.2.1 Build 604
- (General) A harmless exception could be generated during ProEx shut-down. This was very random and appears to have depended on individual PC configurations. ProEx’s exception handler is now explicitly disabled just prior to the final stages of shut-down which should prevent such exceptions occurring.
- (General) ProEx will now gently remind you to complete the Options->User details if you have forgotten to do so.
- (Pre-Authoring) The file extension “.mp2” was not recognised as a valid extension for a MPEG audio elementary file; it now is.
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed a database problem that could occur when switching from Pre-Authoring to Pre-Mastering (affected CutTable).
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed a “Divide By Zero” exception that could occur during stream opening.
- (Pre-Authoring) If an existing Project Database can not be opened because it has a corrupt header, ProEx will now attempt to fix it.
- (Pre-Authoring) The button on the Options->Black Frame tab was wrongly enabled if a video stream was not loaded. Pressing this button would cause a crash as there was no video frame to analyse. This has been fixed.
- (Pre-Authoring) If an audio or video file was locked by another process, an incorrect and highly misleading error message was displayed. This has been fixed.
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed a bug in the demultiplexer which could, under a rare set of circumstances, result in unreadable streams being emitted.
- (Pre-Authoring) Fixed the bug that caused an exception when editing a subtitle and moving either the start or end frames such that a Chapter Point was included.
- (Pre-Authoring) Added an option to enforce a one-frame gap between consecutive subtitles. See Subtitle Options Tab on Page 31 for further information.
- (Pre-Authoring) Added a trap to detect and prevent an exception that occurs if the duration of a video stream can not be ascertained due to possibly corrupt Sequence Header(s).
- (Pre-Authoring) Added the ability to toggle the display of Frame Numbers between their Presentation Sequence (the default) and their Decoder (or Stream) Sequence. See the end of the Table commencing on page 37.
- (Pre-Authoring) When adding Chapter Points, previous versions of ProEx always snapped to the nearest I Frame which could be earlier or later than the desired position. Added the ability to control this behaviour and now you can specify whether to snap to nearest, snap to previous, or, snap to next I Frame. See Chapter Options Tab on page 30 for more details.
- (Pre-Authoring) Video stream encoding Profile/Level and Chroma values are now checked for compliance with the DVD-Video Specification.
- (Pre-Mastering) A problem affecting the auto-saving of the log file has been fixed.
- (Pre-Mastering) Cleaned-up the appearance of DVD Volume compression window. The statistical data presented is now in a better, clearer format as can be seen on page 51.
- (Pre-Mastering) Partial compression of multi-VTS volumes is now supported on a per-VTS basis. See “Partial Compression“ on page 50.
- (Pre-Mastering) All the Caption Bar buttons, with the exception of Program Exit, are now only visible when a DVD Volume is not playing (i.e. the current Domain is Stop). This prevents potentially unsafe operations from taking place.
2-Sept-2006 Version 3.1.3 Build 604
- Fixes the “Mode-switching” problem experienced by some users who could not switch back to Pre-Authoring Mode.
- Fixes the problem whereby the Quality Agent sent bugs reports anonymously.
31-Aug-2006 Version 3.1.2 Build 603
- Pre-Mastering: DVD compression is now spawned as a separate process to reduce overall consumption of system resources.
- Pre-Mastering: Due to a bug, DVD compression was not available to most users with Version 3.1.1
29-Aug-2006 Version 3.1.1 Build 602
- Pre-Authoring: The Timeline “scrub-bar” now displays Frame numbers as a tooltip above the “thumb” as it is dragged by the mouse.
- Pre-Mastering: DVD Volumes compiled by DVD-lab PRO Version 2.1 were not recognised as being “legitimate” due to changes introduced by that version’s compiler. This has been fixed.
- Pre-Mastering: All DirectShow filters used to render audio, video and sub-picture streams are now added to the Log for problem-solving purposes.
- Pre-Mastering: The recording of Player Registers and Prohibited User Operations are now clustured so that the lists are not broken by other Log entries.
- Pre-Mastering: Prohibited User Operations reporting has been modified.
- Pre-Mastering: Compiled volumes can now be compressed to assist users who find their projects compile slightly over-size.
For a complete list of changes please see page 85 of the updated manual.
