Article Updates

I got a lot of questions about the exact lenses. While this is not cruical, anything will do for experiments, here is what I got:
35 mm was a Canon EF 50mm 1:18 (it is a great lens BTW)
Macro came from a BOWER super wide macro lens 0.42x. That is a wide adapter that can be screwed on a normal lens and consist of the wide lens and a macro adapter ring that can be removed (there is no marking on the macro about the power). I used that ring, however any medium power macro lens would be fine. You actually set the focus on the camera so generally any macro lens in any distance can be used - just adjust zoom (get rid of vigneting) and manually focus so the projected image is in focus. The macro lens task is to shorten the distance between camera and the projected image. If your video camera has good macro, it may not even be needed.

Errata:
pointed out by Alexander Smith:
On the first page in the diagram of the various formats, it seems you indicate that a 35mm movie camera has the same frame size as a 35mm still camera, which it doesn’t. Because the film runs vertically, standard aperture is actually closer to APS. That makes a normal lens closer to 32mm or so, rather than 50mm.

I am completely intrigued by your project! I haven’t been able to get an answer as to why video cameras do what they do when compared to film, now I understand a bit better.

i would love to build one for my Sony DVC-PC110 which is a 37mm lens, but I don’t fully understand the macro side of the project. Is this what I need? http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=filters&itemnum=37CUS

I am assuming you’d use just one of the rings shown there at Tiffen.

I believe i have a dead CD player around, so no worries there!

Finally, you say there’s a project box at Radio Shack? I’ll have to go and have a look for that one.

What thickness particle board did you use?

Sorry for all of the question, but I’d love to try it.

Can you by any chance show an image of a person where there are in focus and the rest of the room isn’t?

Many thanks for your wonderful, and quite detailed, article!

    Ryan
